Small Business Online Review Management

Even for small, local businesses, online reputation matters.  Poor online reviews can mean lost revenue.

Reputation matters.  A lot.

Ask Lance Armstrong.  Once a hero and champion, he’s now a pariah.  And as someone exposed as a major cheat, he deserves his reputation.

Ask Apple.  Their reputation is so powerful that people assume they’ll need Apple’s latest innovation – before they even know what it is.

Ask a popular restaurant in your area.  Their tables are full all the time because the word is out – great food, atmosphere, and value.

You can’t ask an un-popular restaurant.  Reviews spread that they were sub-par and now they’re out of business.

It’s hard to argue about how reviews help us as consumers.  In a world where we are bombarded by advertisements, brand messages, and informational marketing, reviews from real people provide credibility.  This is word-of-mouth from people who actually used the product or service.  It helps to know what to expect – which in turn helps us make a decision.

Of course former Lance Armstrong fans know the world is not perfect.  Businesses try to game the system with fake reviews.  Good ones about themselves and bad ones about their competition.

People are not perfect.  Some see lodging complaints as their purpose in life.  Good businesses occasionally make dumb mistakes.

However, the big picture is that reputation matters more than ever because it’s communicated more with consumer created reviews – content which stays in the digital “cloud” indefinitely.

As a business, your goal is provide high-level of value and get people talking about it.  An occasional blip is no big deal, but overall people will assume a lot of strong reviews reflects quality service – and vice versa.

If you think you can run a business that’s much more about your profit that the value you deliver, your reviews – and reputation – will suffer.  Just ask Lance.
